National Brain Injury Awareness Day is March 21. On this day, the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) encourages individuals to wear green and show your support of “Not Alone.” The “Not Alone” campaign is designed to educate the general public about the incidence of brain injury and the needs of people with brain injuries and their families. The campaign also lends itself to outreach within the brain injury community to de-stigmatize the injury, empower those who have survived, and promote the many types of support that are available.
A brain injury can happen anytime, anywhere to anyone. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) do not discriminate. An estimated 1.7 million people will sustain a brain injury each year nationwide, and each year, TBIs contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability. An injury that happens in an instant can bring a lifetime of physical, cognitive and behavior challenges and early, equal and adequate access to care will greatly increase overall quality of life.
