Trauma Surgery services at Regional One Health
Andrew James Kerwin, MD serves as the chief of trauma at the Elvis Presley Trauma Center at Regional One Health. He leads a multidisciplinary team that provides lifesaving care for patients at one of the nation’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Centers.
As a Level 1 Trauma Center, the Elvis Presley Trauma Center is the designated trauma center for the most critically injured patients from a 150-mile radius. The facility is available around-the-clock to care for patients from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri.
Dr. Kerwin is board-certified in surgery and surgical critical care. He earned his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield and completed his residency at Medical College of Ohio. He also held an internship at Loyola University Medical Center and a fellowship in trauma and critical care at University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Prior to joining the leadership team at Regional One Health, Dr. Kerwin was medical director for the surgical intensive care unit and trauma program at University of Florida Health, Jacksonville.
As an academic, Dr. Kerwin is currently division chief for trauma and surgical critical care in the department of surgery at UTHSC as well as a professor in the department of surgery. He held similar positions at the University of Florida College of Medicine, where he was honored with the Exemplary Teacher Award and Excellence in Student Education Award on several occasions.
Dr. Kerwin has given a variety of presentations and has a number of prestigious publications to his name. His research has appeared in The Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection & Critical Care; Journal of Investigative Surgery; American Surgeon; Surgery; Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery; and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
He has also contributed book chapters on topics including trauma systems, triage and transport; identification of spinal fractures; and abdominal and perineal injury. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons and others. Dr. Kerwin is involved in a variety of professional societies, including the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American College of Surgeons, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and American College of Surgeons.
As an undergraduate, he played varsity baseball at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.
