Erica Mitchell, MD, MEd SE, FACS, DFSVS is medical director for vascular and endovascular surgery at Regional One Health. She uses advanced surgical technology to perform procedures such as stent placement, blood clot removal and bypass surgery.
Dr. Mitchell earned her medical degree at University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, then completed a general surgery residency at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and a vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. She also holds a Master of Education degree in surgical education from Imperial College in London and is completing a Master of Health Care Delivery Science degree at Tuck School of Business and Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College.
Dr. Mitchell grew interested in vascular and endovascular surgery during her time at Denver General Health Medical Center, a Level-1 Trauma Center similar to Regional One Health. Her mentor, a trauma surgeon, performed a lot of vascular procedures, and she was fascinated by how it could be used on the smallest veins and arteries and for large, life-threatening injuries.
“I like the variety and acuity of it,” she said. “It involves everything from saving a limb to saving a life.”
Along with her vast clinical experience, Dr. Mitchell is a renowned researcher and academic.
In her academic role, she is a professor in the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine and interim chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at UTHSC. She has published 75 papers in peer reviewed journals and has provided more than 80 invited lectures, conference presentations, and professorships.
She is an active member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, where she coaches peers, supports diversity, equity, and inclusion, verifies vascular surgical centers, and oversees SVS guidelines.
