Owen Phillips, MD, FACOG is an OB/GYN at Regional One Health and a professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Phillips received her medical degree from University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, MS. She completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, MS. Dr. Phillips did her fellowship in reproductive genetics at University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. She received her master’s degree in public health from University of Memphis.

“I grew up in Mississippi and saw a lot of disadvantaged people,” Dr. Phillips said. “I feel that it is a privilege to take care of our patients.” Dr. Phillips shared that it is up to healthcare providers to educate and facilitate improving patients’ lives. “I assume that everyone wants what is best for them, yet if they do not understand the importance of certain health practices or know how to access care or why taking their meds is important, that is on the healthcare system.”

Dr. Phillips earned her master’s degree in public health, which she says changed the way she looks at healthcare. “To understand income inequality, healthcare status, poverty, and how that affects patients’ lives is to understand Memphis and the challenges patients face every day,” Dr. Phillips shared. “Taking care of one patient at a time is the reason I went to medical school, but I hope to work on helping students and residents see a bigger picture.”
