Syed Hasan Raza, MD, Rheumatologist, is hopeful about the future of autoimmune diseases. "Since most inflammatory diseases affect patients in the prime of their lives and can lead to disability, it would seem hope would be lost. However, evidence-based treatments and state-of-the-art medicine can keep patients functional in the majority of cases. I feel the last two decades have been pivotal in advancing the discipline," he explained. "This in turn translates into preventions of disability, better quality of life, and patients being productive members of society.
As an assistant professor in the Department of Rheumatology at University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, he is actively involved in clinical research toward progress in rheumatology and training residents and fellows. His special interests are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and spondyloarthropathies.
Dr. Raza sees patients at Regional One Health's multispecialty practice on the new east campus, now reaching a whole new population of patients that can benefit from his personalized style of practicing rheumatology. "If you do not empathize with each of your patients, you cannot be a good doctor, said Dr. Raza. People will forget what you said or did but they will never forget how you made them feel."
